Alexander Canario's time with the Pirates has been short to this point. Shelton mostly played him as a weakside platoon option with Suwinski, and Pham was a clearly meant to be the everyday starter.
Canario certainly has a power tool that he has showed off during his last brief stints in the majors with the Cubbies. The Pirates have given him a longer look than both of his seasons with the Cubs, and it may pay off.
Canario's current Barrel per Batted Ball Event and more impressively Barrel per Plate Appearance would rank just behind Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani, and give the Pirates another Barrel Rider ("The Hobit Pun") along with Oneil Cruz.
Canario's Average Bat Speed this season would rank 4th in the league at 77.1 MPH along with Jo Adell. Cruz currently leads the league. Canario also has a xwOBA of .367 and xSLG of .557. This comes with good walk rates and decent chase rates. Off bat metrics look good too. He is above average in arm strength and sprint speed.
The biggest thing going against Canario is his whiff rates against break. When he makes contact against any pitch he hits it hard, but he still whiffs too often against breaking pitches.
At this point in the season, the Bucs don't have anything to lose and if there is a chance to develop a power bat the Bucs must pounce on it.
