The Pirates will likely end this season last in the majors in Runs Scored, home runs, slugging, and OPS. That means they have the worst results offensively, they are the worst at the best statistical indicator at scoring runs, the worst power, and they are last in the league at overall hitting.

Clearly the Bucs need to improve their offense this offseason. They will not compete for the likes of Bo Bichette, Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker, Pete Alonso, and Kyle Schwarber. However, they may be able to compete for the next tier of hitters this offseason especially if they trade Mitch Keller's salary away.

There is a couple potential targets for the Bucs in this tier that would integrate well into the lineup and improve the Bucs weaknesses. The Bucs struggled with break this year. That includes the curveball, slider, and changeup. They were especially bad against the curveball and slider this year.

Josh Naylor excelled against all of these pitches and had low whiff rates with all of these pitch types this year. Naylor also did overall well with these pitches last year as well with exception to the curveball. However, he didn't face many curveballs last year so that may be an outlier. He will probably cost a bit more per year than Mitch Keller, both approaching 20 million a year. Naylor is a proven star hitter and hits what the rest of the Pirates lineup cannot.

Brandon Lowe would be another hitter in the same tier as Josh Naylor, and would cost around the same. He also hits what the current Pirates roster cannot. The biggest difference was Lowe didn't hit the Changeup well last year, and team did take advantage of that throwing the pitch 17% of the time. Lowe still has a club option with the Rays. The Rays have not confirmed they will exercise their option.

The next tier of hitters that seem to have some consistency hitting the changeup, slider, and curve is Max Muncy and Dominic Smith. Muncy didn't hit the curve well last year while Smith didn't hit the Changeup well last year. However, these are lower cost veterans who might place well in the Pirates lineup.

All of these players may be better in a strong side platoon role. None of them are good fielders.
